my small vegetable patch August 16, 2006

My tomatoes are slow this year. Usually, I start my own plants, and always pick the earliest varieties. This spring, I bought single plants from Walmart, and I think they must be geared for Arkansas, or something. The Romas are just beginning, and the cherry tomatoes are still mostly green. Next spring, I will start my own, or buy from a local plant dealer, which I should of done anyway.
The blue potatoes are looking good. My grandsons want to be in on the digging, so will wait for them. I will do potatoes again, and maybe sweet potatoes, too. The plants look healthy, no pests at all, surprisingly.
I had good luck with the squash and cucumbers, actually had way too many zucchinis, but that is okay. More to pass along. For the second year, I grew long vine cucumbers on wire tomato cages. The vines climb around the cage, and the cucumbers stay neat and tidy.
The shallots, onions, and chives, garlic and regular, did well, and still have attractive flower tops, shown below. Just noticed this– couldn’t figure out how to post more than one shot from flickr- the photos are on my photostream there.
That is about it for my vegetable patch this summer. It is just a small corner of the garden, but can’t imagine summer without a few fresh from the garden things.
