family history–Oklahoma during the depression August 17, 2006

Here is another photo I found when while sorting through my files. It is a shot taken by the photographer Dorothea Lange for her series on the depression in the western states. It was printed in the Smithsonian Magazine in the 1980’s.
My mom spotted my dad’s father in the photo. He is the second one from the left, in the black hat. This was taken in Sallisaw, Oklahoma in 1937 or 38. These men were all out of work, and probably never knew they were being photographed. My grandfather, we called him Papa Ray, eventually found work raising mules for the army, but by that time the family was spread across the country, the boys in CCC camps and the girls raising their young siblings, and their own families. My father’s mother had died the year before, of something that would not of taken her in better conditions.
I am who I am because of the path my family history has taken. Mine went through some hard times, as did many other families. These stories make up our collective history, and should not be lost.
a new photoblog for gardenpath August 17, 2006

As a result of all the photo file cleaning and organizing that I have been doing lately, I have started a new companion blog on iWeb to go along with this one.
I will still post gardening, food, and fiber arts photos here, through flickr, but will put the ones from here that I like best, and all new photograph category photos there.
I have been using flicker for several days, and that seems to be working fine. My pages will look slightly different, but that is okay. My husband has been telling me that I should watch my photo posting and size on wordpress, as they have limits, so that is the reason for the change.
The new blog is listed in my blog roll under gardenpath photos. Or, you can go here.
