It would be interesting to know where else they are, so please let me know.

We have them here in Long Island. I have seen one recently in our small yard. He is a newcomer.
We have them in the northern half of Minnesota. I’ve never seen them as far south as Minneapolis, though.
How fascinating!
We saw our first black squirrel in Sullivan County New York Friday and were delighted! I put my head out of the car window and told him that we had better pickings for squirrels at our house and he should drop by for lunch
Love the photo!!!
I enjoyed reading the article you sent us to. I have never seen a black squirrel. Black gives the squirrel a whole new look. Jazzy. I like it! Good photo too, no problem with catching the squirrel in the right light.
I’ve only seen them out west. When I lived in Colorado, they were the squirrels we always saw.
Would love to have one like that raiding the bird feeders!
What a little beauty! I didn’t even know there were black squirrels. Hope they come your way so you can enjoy them, too.
i saw one when we were in niagra falls in the spring
We have them here in the Philadelphia, PA region too. They started out being a known population in Princeton, New Jersey, and I guess the mutation, or whatever it is, spread a bit because we have recently begun seeing them here on the Main Line, the suburbs just outside of Philadelphia.
Hi there, While I live in RI, I have seen black squirrels in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts. We just have the grey ones here but they are entertaining!
I have never seen a balck squirrel. Only white ones. But if they are spreading into the Philly burbs, its only a matter of time. They look a little wilder for some reason. Shaggier.
Black squirrels, while not common, are well-known in Brooklyn (the western end of Long Island!). There is also now a recent sighting of the first white squirrel in Prospect Park, giving us black, white, and the regular grey squirrels.
I saw a black squirrel in Canandaigua, Ontario Co., NY a couple of years ago. Is it true that they’re black due to eating black walnuts? That’s what I’ve heard - don’t know if it’s true!
Black squirrels are well-known in Northeast Ohio as they are all over the Kent State University campus. You occasionally see bumper stickers with black squirrels on them here, and I always assume that the driver is a KSU alumnus. Here’s some history:

I live in sw michigan, in Fennville - I have quite a large population of black squirrels in my yard. One mother squirrel had a litter of 5 babies up in the eves of our house. They seen to be tamer than the grey, brown or (especially )the red ones. I call them and they come out to be fed. I feed them peanuts, sunflower seeds and peanut butter - but we also have many different varieties of nut trees in our yard and in the area where we live. I love em!!
I live near the resort town of Saugatuck michigan and there they are everywhere. - -In Michigan they seem to be in areas near the lake shore.
I saw a black squirrel playing with three other red squirrels in my yard in Longmont, CO this past weekend. I watched it for some time, as I wanted to be sure it was actually a squirrel. I was very surprised! I’ve lived in Colorado my entire life and have never seen one.
I JUST saw my first Black Squirrel on Long Island on New Years Eve, early in the day!!!
he was the only one, very shy, while the grey squirrels were very active and animated!!!!
I have them in my yard on Long Island (Deer Park) I see what I think is a large family. They are very alert, seeming to know all that’s around them. So beautiful..
Hi - We live in Milo Maine. My mother has a black Squirrel in her back yard. I’ll try to get a photo soon. This is the first one we’ve ever seen.

Saw my first black squirrel yesterday in East Patchogue, NY. He ran in front of my car. I stopped to let him go by and watched him in total amazement as he crossed the road and ran up a tree. Beautiful.
We have had black squirrels in our yard for the last couple of years in Mamaroneck NY, they seem to come closer to people and are aggressive towards the gray squirrels.
There are a number of black squirrels living in my neighborhood in Reading, MA. I grew up about 15 or so miles from here but had never seen a single black squirrel before moving to this particular neighborhood.
I just saw a black squirrel in South China, Maine today.

I live in Danvers, Massachusetts and we have seen a black squirrel. I’m in my 40s, lived here all my life and have never seen one like this. We’ve seen it multiple times in our backyard and woods.
I live in Newcastle, Maine and have been seeing the black squirrels for a few years now. We have at least three at our bird feeders. I have been seeing them so often that I now have noticed differences in them. The one I am looking at today is not as black as the other two. This one is lighter and has a brown tint to his (or her) underbelly.
There’s one on Timber Lane in Newcastle, Me.
