in the hayfield May 26, 2007

Yesterday morning, I took a walk to the woods to check on the lady slippers. The weather has turned off warm, so I thought they might be out. No luck there, but I did hear a pair of flickers in the trees, and spot their nest. Later, I took a shot of them on the ground, but I would have to point out where they are in the photo, so am not bothering to post it. I came home along the edge of the hayfield, to see if I could hear any bobolinks. I did, but they were too far away to try to photograph. The grass is about a foot tall now, and teaming with butterflies, bugs and dragonflies. I quickly snapped several photos of this little guy. I think it is a silver bordered fritillary, but not quite sure. The markings don’t seem quite as bold as the ones in the guides. You can judge the size by the dandelion top. This shot is my desktop photo for now. So very nice to see green!
