I’ve been busy this summer dragonfly hunting. It is fun, and I enjoy seeing what I can catch with my camera lens. But, you won’t find me trying to get a shot of a black fly or mosquito!

Good news! We age getting a gentle rain this morning in southern Maine. My garden certainly needed it, having very sandy soil. I hope it lasts for a while. Yesterday, I watered my tomatoes and a few of my new plants, but the rest of the garden was looking awfully dry.
While I was out walking this past week, I found that my pink yarrow had made it’s way out to the edge of the woods. I could not have planned a better place for it. It is surrounded by ferns and wild white yarrow. I went to take a shot of the overall scene yesterday, but the light was already too harsh, so I will get it sometime this week.

Does this make you hungry? It was gone about two seconds after I took this shot, and, it was good! This plant is left over from ones I had planted along the path in my garden when our grandsons were small. They loved to pick berries and even managed to get a few into the house. I washed the berry off with the hose before I ate it, but they didn’t bother with washing them at all.
The boys are big now, and the strawberries have been gone from the garden a couple of years. This plant is one of the runners from the original twenty five plants I bought. I found it growing under a lily, and moved it to the sun this spring. This morning, I noticed that five more berries are almost ready to eat.
two shots of a luna moth June 22, 2007

When I went to my friend Hazel’s house this morning, a Luna Moth was sitting in her driveway. It is the second one she has had lately. I went back home for my camera, and after taking several shots, we decided to move it to safety. I carefully lifted it into a pot of Dusty Miller. It seemed happy there, and when I left for home, the moth was hanging upside down, under a leaf.
I wondered what was drawing so many Luna Moths to her yard, so looked it up. My field guide said that they are drawn to outdoor lights. Well, she has one on the front of her garage, so that must be it. Here is another shot taken after the move. Sure hope the moth doesn’t eat the Dusty Miller leaves, since it was my idea to put it there.

I hate to admit this, but I am not sure what this is. When I started Golden Marguerite and St. John’s Chamomile last year, I lost track of which was which. Both plants have fern-like foliage, and similar colored flowers. The other plant, (which is taller) is going to be blooming next week, so maybe I can get the names straightened out then!
