a monarch and a silver-bordered fritillary July 13, 2007

We made the garden in a U-shaped area of lawn surrounded on three sides by field. So I can easily snap photos of what is going on in the field around me, while I work. The area to the right of the garden is loaded with milkweed. That is the major monarch hangout around here. They really haven’t started coming into the garden much, but then, the liatris and cone flowers aren’t blooming yet.
Yesterday while out walking I found another good place to see a lot of butterflies. There is a huge patch of spreading dogbane, a bush with a pretty little pink flower, with candy-striped centers, between our house and the woods. I saw all sorts of butterflies there, but since I have shown photos of most of them lately, I chose this shot for today. It is a silver-bordered-fritillary, not too large, maybe an inch and a half across. This one is going into my calendar project for sure.
