I took these shots in my garden yesterday afternoon. The hummingbird came very close to me while I worked, and seemed so intent on feeding that she didn’t mind the camera.

These are magnificent photographs. How you caught the hummingbird so clearly is beyond me. The colours are so crisp and clear … the Monarda flowers are breathtaking.

I must concur with Kate - the photos are exquisite, Sandy. You must have a magic approach with hummingbirds and flowers alike!

Those are some great photos! My goal is to get hummingbird photos this summer no luck so far.

4. Rondi - July 19, 2007

Wow! These pictures take my breath away! How did you do that?!

5. jodi - July 19, 2007

Marvelous photos, Sandy! Are you using a tripod?

6. The TriniGourmet - July 19, 2007

aww i love hummingbirds… really stunning shots :)

7. lizalee - July 19, 2007

Lovely! Since the hummers love them so much, I may have to find some of those for my yard too. Uh-oh . . . is this getting out of hand? :)

Guys, no tripod, just a fairly fast camera. I have been seeing the hummingbirds at the bee balm a lot since it came out, and was lucky this day. There was a butterfly about five feet away from the bee balm I was after, so I just turned slowly and starting shooting when I saw the hummer.

Sandy; Photographic inspiration! I am going to keep trying with my hummingbird! Also the dragonflies and the butterflies. Your nature photos rule!

Wonderful pictures Sandy!!

Those are the best shots - hands down. Sandy, I’ve noticed the females are intent on feeding and don’t mind the camera much. What about those males, though? They steer clear of me.

12. Sandy - July 19, 2007

Mary, I can see two sizes of hummingbirds at the feeder from the house, but didn’t know until I looked up the ruby throated ones this week that the male is smaller. All of the photos I have been getting are females. Thanks for telling me that.

Great photos. I’m not sure which I like better, the bee balm or the bird. Amazing that you captured both so clearly!

What beautiful photos!

What a thrill to snap so vividly! Lovely photos, Sandy.

My hummers have been drinking the feeder dry every day. I think the babies have fledged and they are all having brunch every day. The bee balm is just about to bloom, so they should have plenty of nectar to subsidize their appetites.

17. Sandy - July 19, 2007

Giddy, so they bring the little ones to the feeder? I have never seen baby hummers.

18. Zoey - July 20, 2007

Great hummer pics, Sandy. I have only seen two hummers this year. Most years I am out camera stalking them because it is such a thrill to get a good clear shot!

Sweet birds.

I have added your blog to my links. I plan to come back to read more and more of your great gardening-blog.
