red maple leaves September 30, 2007

This is the view out our back door this week. There is a row of old maples planted between our house and the next that has been coming down in bits and pieces for years. They still can produce a wonderful autumn display, though.
A closer look at leaves that have already fallen to the ground. The red maple leaves always come down before the yellow and oranges tree leaves.
This bright yellow caterpillar was speeding down the trunk of one of the maples while I was taking the photograph of the leaves. Does anyone know what kind it is? It disappeared into the ground as soon as it got to the bottom.

old doors from two states September 27, 2007

I haven’t taken any photos for my old door collection in a long time. This month, I got a chance to get two new ones. This shot was taken in New Hampshire last week. You can probably tell it is the end of an old barn. I don’t think this door is used anymore, unless the farmer is also a rock climber.
This shot was taken in Wiscasset, Maine a few weeks ago at the Castle Tucker. My friends and I toured the house, built in 1807. It was the home of a cotton merchant, and if you are ever in that area, a very interesting place to see. The red door goes to the attached barn at the back of the house. The yard overlooks the entrance to the Wiscasset harbor. Can you imagine watching sailing ships come and go as you tended your gardens or took care of laundry?

We went to visit friends in southern New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon. I took these shots as we traveled route 202 going toward south. It is a pretty road, with lots of New England villages to pass through, and much to see. Because we got a late start, I didn’t stop to take photos, but did get a few out the van window. The foliage is brighter there than ours is here in southern Maine, but not in full color yet.
We passed many stands of flowers, apples and pumpkins. This one was so close to the road I could almost touch it. I wanted a pumpkin shot to go with it, but didn’t get a good, clear one.
We passed so many lakes I lost track of the names. This one was somewhere near Dublin, or Peterborough, I think. Beautiful day, beautiful scenery, not enough time!
watermelon haiku September 24, 2007

The prompt for this week is juicy. I grew up on a farm in Oklahoma, where late summer nights meant cutting a large melon on the back porch table after supper. Some days, my brother and sister and I would go right to the field and drop a ripe melon to break it open, and eat it right there. It was not strange to hear my mom say at night, “you kids hose down before you come in this house!” No photo today, these scenes are from my memories of childhood.
