red maple leaves September 30, 2007

This is the view out our back door this week. There is a row of old maples planted between our house and the next that has been coming down in bits and pieces for years. They still can produce a wonderful autumn display, though.
A closer look at leaves that have already fallen to the ground. The red maple leaves always come down before the yellow and oranges tree leaves.
This bright yellow caterpillar was speeding down the trunk of one of the maples while I was taking the photograph of the leaves. Does anyone know what kind it is? It disappeared into the ground as soon as it got to the bottom.

The red is really beginning to put on a spectacular show up here, but the ones in our yard must be a different variety as they are just now starting to show a bit of red. We should be at peak color in another couple of weeks. I love this time of year!
The caterpillar has an interesting color. I know green ones but have never seen a yellow one yet.

Just found your blog…love the pictures. I’m trying to get hubby to take me out for a few to get some shots today…not much light here though…Autumn is really here isn’t it?
I’m still learning how to do this blog site..
Lovely! The leaves on the moss is an especially beautiful shot.
glorious glorious view!
Remember that silver maple that we had to take down? I want to replace it with a an Autumn Red Maple of a decent size. I can’t stand the absence of a tree and I think the blazing red leaves will look great against our green roof. I love seeing your fall colors. It won’t be long before we’re seeing those colors.
Sandy: Beautiful photos. I am catching up on your recent blogs and love those familiar New England shots. Both the flower and the butterfly are awesome!
Gorgeous color on those maple leaves! Nice photos.
Your maples are ahead of ours, that’s for sure. Exquisite colour, and the caterpillar is an entertaining extra!
Lovely red maple. I do not know what the critter is but It looks like I took a photo of his cousin about 2 or 3 weeks ago, crawling around on my maple tree trunk as well.
I rediscovered your blog. I rssed it.
beautiful leaves, wonderful caterpillar, though I’ve no idea what type it is
Can you please send me a photo of one large red maple leaf? Thanks, Karen Tauber
