I went this out afternoon to take a shot of the crows in the bare maples. Seven of them were gathered up near the top of the largest tree. They can be found up there a good deal of the day. I think it is because they can see all the feeders from that high up. Anyway, when I heard seagulls raising a fuss high over my head, I looked up. This is what was bothering them.
I snapped several photos when I saw the white head and tail, but wasn’t expecting much from them. We haven’t seen bald eagles around here before, so thought I must be mistaken. When I looked at the photos in iPhoto, they were better than I had hoped for. Now that I know we have eagles in the area, I will be watching the sky much more carefully.
just a few more leaves October 24, 2007

The last two days have been wet and gray. We had lots of wind yesterday, so many of the trees in our yard are bare of leaves, including the one above. This shot was taken on Monday, a sunny day with a temperature of 80 degrees. That leaf is not falling. Look closely and you can see a spiderweb thread holding it in place. I noticed it because it was spinning round and round. The thread eventually broke, but I had enough time to go indoors and get my camera. I should have used my Coolpix and made a short movie!
In the last ten years, many clumps of birch trees have grown up in the field across the road. What an addition to the neighborhood! They are pretty in all seasons, and a great place for birds, turkeys, and other wildlife to gather. This shot was taken against the sky from beneath one of the trees.
I found a peeper! October 23, 2007

This little guy startled me in the woods this past Sunday. I was down on my knees taking a shot of a red mushroom when something moved in the pine needles near my hand. The first thing I thought of was a snake, so was happy to see it was a tiny frog. I just got around to looking it up this morning, and found out some very interesting information on the northern peeper. Check out Wikipedia below to see of the local names for them. They actually freeze in the winter and thaw out in the spring!
Look here and here for more peeper information.
This small meadowhawk greeted me on my way out of the woods. I sure wasn’t expecting to see a dragonfly this late in October. That odd section of the shot is just a blurred blade of grass-I was focused on the dragonfly.

The One Deep Breath prompt this week is closeness
My mom turns 83 tomorrow. She doesn’t get out much anymore, but does love to visit with her far away family and friends on the phone. Thank goodness for those ugly wires. I have to say that this is the first time I have ever intentionally put them in a photo!
When I think of haiku, I think of nature, so here is one for that mother.

I am all done with my calendar for this year’s Christmas. iPhoto does a great job and offers lots of different templates and colors. Most of my pages are single shots, but two and three shot set ups are available in the template I used. All the information for birthdays and other occasions we observe is sent over automatically from iCal, another program I have on my Mac computer. This is the second year I have made calendars and have already decided that next year’s calendar will be herbs.
Here is a page from inside-
