at the feeder–a hairy woodpecker December 11, 2007

One of our most common woodpeckers in Maine, the hairy is a regular at the suet feeder and the old trees near our yard. This day, he was very intent on his food, so I was able to get quite close. Look and listen here for more information about this bright bird.

Sandy,
This photograph is quite simply awesome! I love the way the bird is angled from the tree … it has the cutest head!
Great shot. We have the large and the little downys here.
I love the woodpeckers. Have a suet feeder hung just outside my window where I can watch their comings and goings all day long.
You have captured a delightful photo.
We have lots of Hairy and Downy woodpeckers. Thanks for the link, it was very interesting. We have a family of pileated woodpeckers, as well and I’m waiting for one to sit still long enough to get a good photo
How big is he? He reminds me of our little Downies here.
I’ve seen three species of woodpeckers in my backyard here in Brooklyn. The Downies are the most common.
xris, it is a good sized bird, about nine inches. But I have noticed the little downies chasing it away!
Great shot– we just seem to get downies here in Colorado. Got to see a Pileated, though, in Indiana in November! Wow…
Very nice – I would confuse them with the Downys here.
Thanks for linking to the cornell site–I had forgotten how useful it can be.
Great photo of the woodpecker too.
