hard work on a cold day January 17, 2008

This is why I always take my camera when I go to my friend’s house for coffee. She has a feeder right outside her window.

We heard this little downy before we saw him. He is staying busy on this cold day.

The temperature was 0ยบ when I left the house this morning. Doesn’t seem to bother him at all.

Our woodpecker has discovered the suet feeders, but I still hear him/her drumming on trees when I’m outside. I love them; what I want to see and photograph is a pileated woodpecker. They do come here occasionally, but they’re very skittish.

Good photo, Sandy. Downys are very persistent. 0 degrees? I give that little bird a lot of credit. I assume your friend’s feeders include nuts or suet. They love it!

I’m a newcomer to your blog and to birding- just kinda came to them both on a whim. I made one of your chickadee photos the background on my laptop. I love those little guys. Aren’t they just the best dressed! Thanks for sharing your photos. Your blog posts are simple and sincere. A real treat in the quiet hours of the morning before the dawn stirs.

Dear Sandy,
Cold here too in the Mid-west. The Downy Woodpecker is a charmer!
Stay warm!

The cold doesn’t seem to be bothering Downy at all. What great pictures you took… that’s a good practice – always having your camera when you go to your friend’s for coffee.

this is a lovely series of photos, the red on the woodpeckers head is so brillaint against the black and white of the rest of the scene

We have a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers at our feeder. Haven’t seen any Downy’s lately.

Beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Downy here in the Northwest. Love that red head!
