rangeleydeer

This shot was taken by my friend Carolyn this week at the camp she and her husband have in Rangeley, a beautiful little town located in Maine’s great north woods. It is not unusual for them to see deer in their yard. Pretty, aren’t they?

This is why I always take my camera when I go to my friend’s house for coffee. She has a feeder right outside her window.

We heard this little downy before we saw him. He is staying busy on this cold day.

The temperature was 0ยบ when I left the house this morning. Doesn’t seem to bother him at all.

shelter

I took this photo out my back window yesterday, and it pretty much describes how lots of us spent yesterday, here in Maine. We had heavy snow, starting around seven in the morning, and lasting most of the day. We went to an early appointment, thinking we would be home before the worst hit, we were not. For the rest of the day, I was glad to be indoors looking out. The only traffic, to speak of was plow trucks, and for once, we had a quiet day. By night time, we had maybe 10 inches of light fluffy snow.

Crows could be heard calling from the occasionally, but not seen. I couldn’t even see the road across the field. We had our woodpeckers though, study little birds that they are. Remember the old video game PacMac? That is what they reminded me of as the went up and down the maple tree taking turns at the suet. At one time there were four spaced out over the treetop. I tried for a shot of that, but it was just too dark by then. How did the rest of you in the northeast pass the storm day?

sunandfrost

When the sun came up this morning I could see that frost had decorated everything outdoors. It must have been all the moisture left over from the rain we had yesterday. For the first time this winter, thanks to the rain and cold over night temperatures, I was able to walk on top of the snow, out across the field. The turkeys were taking advantage of the hard crust too, but they didn’t get within camera range while I was out. Notice how the light changed from gold to white in the hour in between the shots.
