Trees and bushes don’t have to be green or in bloom to be lovely. These shots were taken on the Eastern Promenade in Portland, Maine last Sunday, as I walked toward the bushes. I wonder how long until they bloom?
Sometimes I think the buds are more beautiful than the tree in full leaf. They hold so much promise.
Lovely photos

ooo…my lilacs look a lot like that right now – I’ve never considered the beaty of the leafless trees…but the birds love them…
I love the really big, old lilacs. There are several spots around here where early settlers (though really not so long ago, most of the history around here is so recent) planted lilacs. The old log homes rotted and disappeared long ago, but sometimes you can come across a beautiful lilac literally in the middle of nowhere.
Sandy, you’re right. The structure of the trees is certainly part of their beauty, and the buds are pretty too. The color in that close-up is lovely. Don’t you love the way the camera makes us notice the detail?
I just checked for bloom time here, and the date on my lilac photos for last year was about the third week in May. I wonder if they bloom about the same time in Portland.
Good luck with your window boxes. I’m glad you were able to get some of ideas from mine. That’s what makes blogging such fun…sharing the ideas
The crowns of our trees are beginning to get that fuzzy/pastel look – the ‘only’ indication of Spring in our part of the Midwest. That strong light in your photos will bring the blooms forth (but not as soon as we’d wish :0)
Please stop by and see my ode to winter’s leaving. Your haiku and photos are my inspiration.
