late afternoon visit to the marsh April 30, 2008

I am still trying to get a good shot of a red winged blackbird. So, late Sunday afternoon I took a walk down to the marsh at the far edge of the woods. The red wings were there, but too far away to get a good photo. While I was standing there just enjoying the sound of the blackbirds, a couple of tiny chickadees flew in and began to do acrobatics in the reeds in front of me. A little further away, this eastern phoebe hunted.
In a tree high above the marsh some sort of hawk watched over the water. Thank goodness, it did not catch anything while I was watching. It finally moved to the other side of the water away from a flock of crows, making their usual noise in the trees near me. I don’t usually see this much activity in the morning when I go. Guess I need to change my walking schedule. Spring turkey season is going on now, so I will be staying out of the woods for the next couple of weeks.
I saw a moose in the field behind the house this week, too. Sure don’t want to run into it in the woods, no matter how good the photos might be.

I love the looks of old tattred cat tails.
I hear Moose are the meanest! The birds seem hyper right about now. A frenzy of love!
I’m glad you didn’t encounter a moose. These were beautiful photos. I loved seeing the bullrushes … as they disintegrate. We had a warm day … the little striped squills suddenly bloomed, just like that!
Love the pictures. I really like the close up of the cat tail.
I’ve noticed our birds are frenzied too…I love the redwinged blackbirds that nest around the pond in the cattails especially, and it’s so nice to hear the songs and frogsong too. Spring, wonderful (if chilly) spring.
There are reports of flooding in parts of Maine…you’re high and dry, aren’t you Sandy? (I also owe you an email…been a bit bogged down here!)
Wonderful photos!
jodi, the flooding is mostly up north this time. Our snow has been gone since the warm weather we had week before last, so the three inches of rain we had earlier in the week didn’t create a problem down here around Portland.
I’m glad to hear you are not being flooded right now. These are very calming shots. I bet it was a noisy place to hang though!
PS: you are right BTW: I don’t get a whole heck of a lot done around here sometimes. My window out in the kitchen is a favorite place for me to hang out.
You’re such a good artist, Sandy. I loved your Chickadee photos - they show the little dears doing what they do. Very cute!
