While looking for wild flowers at the edge of the woods yesterday morning, I caught sight of two little bodies waddling down the path in front of me. The wind was blowing the other way, and they did not seem aware of me. At first, I thought they were porcupines, but as I got closer, I saw that they were just woodchucks. I have never thought of them as forest creatures, but there they were.

A bit later, I came across one of them again. It was standing perfectly still the whole time I was near. Now I am wondering if animals deliberately choose a camouflaged place to hide. And, I am wondering how often I look right at animals without seeing them. This one was still standing like a statue when I left it alone.

Isn’t that neat? Maybe they were out for a stroll in the woods just like yourself. I really like the textures of the forest floor.

I know they’re destructive in gardens but I think they’re handsome animals. Love the Chuckies!

Without seeing him, I wandered too close to one once and he made a little barking sound and stomped his front feet on the ground.

Sandy: Better in the woods than in the garden! I love your oriole pictures!

He’s a handsome little fellow, but oh my, they can be destructive critters. :) Great shots.

It’s great to see them in the natural setting. You can see it working very hard at the colour camouflage in the second photo. It does make you wonder how much we are oblivious to in our daily life, without careful observation.

Soooo how much wood did they chuck?

They are cute - when not in my garden! I had one dig a nest hole near my garden a couple of years ago and he munched greedily on my tomatoes and anything else he could get his chompers on. I was about to send him to woodchuck heaven when a huge thunderstorm came along and flooded his abode. He moved on quite quickly after that.

The soft sunlight you’ve captured in these photos is just beautiful, Sandy.

I love these photos and your post! You raise an intriguing question about just how much we ‘miss’ as we go about the business of living our lives. We don’t see woodchucks here near the ocean but I have seen them when camping in mountain areas.
Hugs and blessings,

What a great opportunity! Perhaps they were a couple of young ones. Very cute….and in the woods, away from our gardens and corn fields, we can really appreciate them. :) I love to see the little creatures going about their business, don’t you? Great photos!

how cute! I often wonder the same too, I’m sure we must miss animals and birds all the time because they’re camouflaged just in front of us
