I saw this guy fly in when I was on the phone with my mom this afternoon. My garden is at least seventy feet from the house, but swallowtails are large, and colorful, so they show up well at a distance. This one has stayed around for the last hour, and show no signs of leaving. The wet sandy soil must be the attraction, since he is in the vegetable section of the garden, which is still flowerless. Below is another view, and here is a link to learn a bit more about the swallowtail.

The colors on this butterfly are so pretty. Great pictures.
Sandy, I just photographed one in my garden yesterday. They are so beautiful!
I love swallowtails - so large and such vibrant colours. Around here they seem to really love the lilac blossoms.
Gorgeous — I didn’t realize they had that much blue!
A beauty for sure, Sandy and you captured it well with your lens. The colors take me right there. Hey… what is that yellow stuff you call sunlight?
I was just noticing recently how well I could see the Tiger Swallowtail, from quite a distance away, flitting around in the front gardens. I saw your comment on Giddy’s blog about how tattered some of them are. That same day I photographed one that had half its left wing missing, poor thing. But it seemed to be flying just fine.
Your photos never cease to amaze me, Sandy. They’re wonderful, always! You have such a good eye
