calico pennant on spreading dogbane June 13, 2008

Yesterday afternoon, I came across twenty or thiry calico pennants just past my garden, on my way to the woods. There were big and small ones, all this color. If you have been around them you know they like to pose. They took turns posing for me all the way to the woods. I labeled this female because the dragonfly one was quite large, but it could be a male that just hasn’t turned red yet, as they do when they mature. If anyone knows exactly how to tell, please let me know. The second shot gives a better look at the markings on the back. I was surprised to see the dogbane getting ready to open, I thought it came a little later. By the way, have you ever read up on spreading dogbane? Look here for all that it can do. Not a pretty little pink flower for kids to pick, for sure.

Fantastic dragonfly shot Sandy

We love dragonflies! It is hard sometimes to get go pictures of them, I love your pictures!
Great photo, Sandy. I often sit on the riverbank near my home and watch the dragonflies hunt aphids in the air. They have fantastic flight control.
That is stunning; you have outdone yourself this time, Sandy. I hope you’ll put that one in your calendar for next year.
Hi Sandy,
You have such skill with that camera. Love that dragonfly! I haven’t seen one of them here. Beautiful!
Excellent shots, Sandy! I love dragonflies and these are gorgeous.
