Last Saturday, a day of perfect weather, my husband and I took a ride through the White Mountains in New Hampshire. We left Scarborough about noon, and headed across western Maine toward the town of North Conway. The east end of the Kancamagus Highway starts just west of of Center Conway. The first two mountains shots were taken heading west on the Kancamagus. The river, I think it is the Swift, runs along the highway for quite a ways.

Hikers probably know the names of these peaks, I don’t, but I love riding along the tops of mountains.

Although this water is cold, lots of people were in it. This spot wasn’t busy because there was no place to park. I got this shot out of the van window.

I think this was one of the spots where the downhill grade was 9%.

This was the view looking west toward Vermont after we got off the Kancamagus and turned north on 93 at Lincoln.

We turned back toward the east on 302. This is the Mount Washington Inn, taken from the road.

Recognize Mt. Washington? That is the cog railway track running up the mountain, and way up top, the dark puff of smoke is the train.

When we stopped for coffee in North Conway on our way home, this cedar waxwing landed right in front of the car. Didn’t it pose pretty?
I love going on long drives, too. A limited pleasure with the current gas prices! Gorgeous Cedar Waxwing — they are like flying works of art!
Road trip! We love them, too, but with gas prices, we are limiting them for the time being. That being said, however, we are headed up to St. Andrews by the Sea on Friday.
I am amazed how these pictures could be taken in my native northern Idaho or here in northeastern Washington. I really liked the cedar waxwing.
wonderful photos, looks like a lovely place! I love waxwings too and that’s a very good portrait of one!
sandy, the first time i rode through the white mts was in 1987, and tears rolled down my cheeks as i took in the beauty before me. i was so overwhelmed by the majesty of the landscape. now i live in a place of similar beauty – the cascades in one direction, the olympics in another. puget sound and the grand pacific near by. nature’s gifts are magnificent, aren’t they?
by the way – we called the flower “rose moss” in georgia! i love the dainty flowers but have not tried them in our garden here thinking they may require more sun and heat than our northern location offers. i may try them here though…your photos were enticing!
Hellow Sandy, Such beautiful vistas. I’ve never seen Mt. Washington but I think I have heard that it seems to have its own unique climate system of dangerously erratic weather. This has always struck me as being very romantic and exciting for some reason. Now I understand why.
