This is my first meadowhawk dragonfly shots of the year. I took these just behind my garden in the field grass. For some reason, I am seeing more dragonflies close to the house this year. Less butterflies, though. Wonder why that is? Below is another pose of the same guy. I really do think dragonflies like to pose. It is almost like they are saying “How about this?” as they move from one place to the other.
As I write this, I hear a strange bird call coming from the garden. It sounds like a crow with a sore throat. Guess, I will take my camera and go see if I can tell what is making that sound. It probably is just a crow with a sore throat.

Those are great photos - I was thinking exactly the same thing about dragonflies liking to pose yesterday as I was trying to snap them (with a strong wind blowing it wasn’t easy!). They are the supermodels of the insect world!
I love dragonflies and that one is spectacular, what a wonderful colour
Wonderful photos - such a nice bright red. I’ve noticed too, that dragonflies seem to be very kind to me when I want to photograph them. Wish I could say the same for the butterflies!
Yes, I think dragonflies are much more laid back than butterflies. When they are in the air, butterflies flit around like they just had six cups of strong coffee!
Terrific photos! They really are a patient lot.
I never tire of your dragonfly shots, Sandy. I love how they fly with us as we kayak across the lake….I always feel they are curious or maybe want to hitch a ride.
Great captures! Dragonflies are so intriquing.
I love the bees. They are all over the lavender here.
Wow! These are lovely shots Sandy. Do you mind telling me what your camera and lens you use ? Love your blog and I will return!
I’ve also found that some dragonflies seem to pose for the photo’s. I think it depends on the species. Some seem more timid while some are very brave. At times the almost seem to turn and say ‘How about this. Is this what you want?”
And another good thing about dragonflies. They tend to prefer perches that are high relative to the surroundings and which provide what would seem to be a commanding view for them. This makes it easier to get a good shot from several angles without too much foliage or the like obstructing the shot.
Great Captures!!
