The prompt this week for One Single Impression is rest. For anyone who has the honor of owning a real cotton quilt. Don’t keep it stiff and new, the more you use it, the better it gets.

This really happened a week or so ago. Never have I seen a field cleared so fast. The storm hit just after the last truck rolled away.

Ohhh, there’s nothing like a soft cotton quilt. They’ve been having to hay quickly around here, too, with all of the rain we’ve been getting.

2. Jane Marie - July 20, 2008

Just looking at the quilt lowers my blood pressure. It’s too warm for quilts now but I still caress mine daily. I love the feel of cotton.

Lovely haiku on two of my favorite things!! I have the pleasure of owning many quilts. In fact, I use to quilt but had to give it up due to time & space constraints. I love hay bales! I posted some photos of a field of bales a week or so ago.

You speak simple pleasures so artfully. A beautiful image. And, my brother finally got his hay up but it did get rained on…. I really like the ‘kus.

5. Amy - July 20, 2008

Yes, old cotton quilts are so wonderful and snuggly. We have fields of golden hay bales just outside of town - I’ve always loved the way they look.

6. Deborah Godin - July 20, 2008

Oh that looks and sounds inviting! Can’t wait for “quilt weather” again.

7. SandyCarlson - July 20, 2008

I love that “simple pleasure,” and I love the contrasting thought of foregoing rest as a matter of necessity.

8. Geraldine - July 20, 2008

You’ve beautifully incorporated this prompt with two great photos. Especially like the quilt one.

9. Raven - July 20, 2008

These are both beautiful. The quilt one touches my heart, though I have no quilt at present. Years ago I had one that was, to be honest, hideously ugly, but wonderfully comforting and precious to me. I felt safe beneath it’s comforting weight.

The second is an exquisite photo and a beautiful poem. I love them both but this second one is my favorite.

Ah … as tired as I feel (even though it’s only mid-day … napping under an old quilt would be such a luxury ;–)
I enjoyed BOTH your images and haiku for this week’s prompt.
Hugs and blessings,

Lovely haiku! The first is so inviting. Worn quilts are so soft. I agree with Storyteller, although napping is always a luxury in my world! I love the photo in the second.

Yes, we are sisters. There are four of us.

I “inherited” a wonderfully worn cotton quilt when I moved here and, yes, it is sooo delightful to nap beneath. The second ‘ku gave me a rather breathless chuckle. I can just see the rush ….

13. Joyce - July 20, 2008

I surely enjoyed your cotton quilt haiku - nice and restful. :)

14. Edward S. Gault - July 20, 2008

There’s nothing like an afternoon nap (especially since I’m up half the night blooging!). I really enjoyed your photography too.
Thank You for sharing.

15. Pam - July 20, 2008

I remember helping bring hay in before the rain at my in-laws. What hard and frantic work. Thanks for the poems.

16. deb - July 20, 2008

I hope every one I make is well used and soft. Great poem.

17. Dee/reddirtramblings - July 21, 2008

Very beautiful. I love quilts, especially the old ones. I have a collection from over 20 years, and it makes me smile. When my husband and son were off camping, I slept under one of the oldest ones. Comfort supreme.~~Dee

18. spacedlaw - July 21, 2008

mmm… this quilt feels very appealing.

19. teric - July 21, 2008

Such lovely messages of haiku. I DO have (and made) quitls like this and I agree. And so true about getting those hay rolls in before the rain.

20. tumblewords - July 21, 2008

I can feel the quilt and the hurriedness of hay baling ahead of the rain - these are lovely pieces!

21. Marnie - July 21, 2008

Such beautiful photography. Love the queen ann lace with hay bales. I would not have thought to photograph one. Your photos are very evocative of country life and each tells its own brief story.

Wonderful haiku poems! I love comfy quilts. Very pretty photos. We live in the country, too, and although we don’t have a farm, we see the round bales everywhere (sometimes square ones, too).

23. Lisa at Greenbow - July 25, 2008

The second haiku makes me want to take a rest. Haying is such difficult work.

24. texasblu - July 28, 2008

These are wonderful! I love the soft feel of the cotton quilt, and I think it’s great the way you used the prompt for the opposite of rest… very enjoyable!
