countryhog
The ground hog above lives at the edge of the woods behind my house. We run into each other on the trail once in a while. On the day I shot this photo, I surprised him while he was enjoying the sun. He dashed indoors, then peeked out, thinking I could not see him. I could.
cityhog
This ground hog lives in the park just off the Eastern Promenade in Portland, Maine. I ran into him this past Sunday. He had ventured out to eat the grass along the trail I was walking on. Although he wasn’t afraid of me, he did scurry back under the fence when a large dog came by. I wonder if he appreciates living at the edge of the Atlantic ocean? And, I wonder if he ever makes his way down to the beach?

I love your photos! I love animals and nature and particularly these days when those sometimes seem to be the only things worth looking at or listening. I’ll definitely be back for another visit.
Thanks for sharing your photos!

It’s so hard to resist the impulse to pet that cute curious face!

I know a lot of people have trouble with them digging in the “wrong” places, but they’re just so darn cute, how could anyone stay mad for long? I can’t see a photo of one any more without thinking of that hilarious scene from Groudnhog Day – “Don’t drive angry!”

He is so cute – peeping out from the grass – lovely to see these photos.

I had one of these cute little beasties in my veggie garden a few years ago. He had made quite a nice little nest among the larger rocks and was enjoying a nice “buffet” of tomatoes, cukes and other veggies every day. I was just about to send him to ground hog heaven when we had 7 inches of rain one day and he was flooded out. Gratefully, he never returned, thereby saving me from doing something I dreaded.

The photos are fantastic! Imagine getting close enough to capture the ‘fuzzy ones’ like that! Even with a zoom.
One really does want to reach out and pat that cute little head.
They should be in a book.

These are wonderful pictures. I marvel at how you capture ‘critters’ like this. They seem to ‘pose’ for you ;–)
Hugs and blessings,
